Between resilience and exceptional shock, the African economy facing the Covid-19 pandemic

A resilient Africa in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic. This is the image defended by the authors of the book L'Economie africaine en 2021 (ed. La Découverte), just published by the French Development Agency (AFD). The continent, underline the authors, has held up rather well in terms of health: it represents 17% of the planetary population and officially recorded, in October 2020, 4.7% of cases of contamination in the world and less than 87,000 deaths in the world. January 27. On the economic front, activity also fell less in Africa (-2.6%) than globally (-4.4%).

"Struck by a presumption of fragility, the continent has nevertheless demonstrated its resilience, with the strength of the youth of its population, the responsiveness of its leaders and its experience of pandemics," said Rémy Rioux, director general of the 'AFD, the operator who orchestrates the deployment of official development assistance.
