Beyond Agriculture: Trade Opportunities within the Pacific Alliance Countries

The  Pacific Alliance is a regional integration initiative created in 2011 by Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Peru that seeks the free movement of goods, services, capital and people. The purpose of the Alliance is to promote greater competitiveness and economic growth for member countries, as well as to expand economic relations with the Asia-Pacific region. Canada has bi-lateral Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) with each Alliance country in the case of Mexico it also has a multi lateral agreement which includes the United States of America called the North America Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

Trading between Canada and the Pacific Alliance has been robust especially with Mexico however with Peru there has been a decline in imports from that country. The decline in Peru may be accounted for in the mineral, machinery, metals, precious stones categories along with a 50% decline in the exports of cocoa and cocoa preparations to Canada.

TFO Canada’s focus in the Alliance has been in fresh and processed foods which appears in the top five goods traded with Canada. However, the good that is top export to canada for each country is Copper and its articles (Chile), Mineral Fuels, Mineral Oils, Bituminous Substances and Mineral Waxes (Colombia), Motor Vehicles, Trailers, Bicycles, Motorcycles and Other Similar Vehicles (Mexico) and Pearls, Precious Stones or Metals, Coins and Jewellery (Peru).

TFO Canada is presently successfully implementing a project with the Pacific Alliance which is focused on the fresh and processed foods. However, each country has sectors and subsectors that are targeted for the Canadian market that we want to share with you:
