Quality issues impact papaya supply in North America

Papaya supply is seeing some challenges throughout the industry at the moment. “We’re dealing with some quality issues because of weather in Mexico and it’s causing some choppiness in the market,” says Anthony Serafino of Exp Group, LLC, adding that the majority of the fruit in the marketplace is coming from Mexico. “The fruit is becoming a little more scarce so we’re hoping as the weeks go by that we will see some improvements on quality.”

At the same time, demand is elevated for papaya, which in North America is mostly the Maradol variety. “The item has been growing in popularity with consumers in recent years,” says Serafino. “The demographics in Canada and the United States are also changing that’s helping growth. There’s just more overall awareness of the item that’s changing and it’s similar to what we saw with Yuca a few years back and how it grew.”
