Value Chain Development for Decent Work

Value chains play a vital role in modern, globalized economies. They have a significant impact on how products are designed, developed and disposed of, and determine who benefits from economic value creation. Value chain development, when executed correctly, can lead to not only economic but also social and environmental improvements. Unfortunately, many development interventions stay at the pilot stage and are not implemented on a large scale. They are often too expensive and require substantial funding to execute. Given the scale of global challenges, a systems approach is necessary. By being catalytic and trying to achieve more with fewer resources, a systems approach can foster local ownership and sustainability of outcomes.

The International Labour Organization’s third edition of “Value Chain Development for Decent Work” provides an overview of how to adopt a systems approach to value chain development with the goal of creating more and better jobs. Learn more!
