Engineering Connections Alumni Success Story: Mario, Project Coordinator
Mario came to Canada in June 2017 with high hopes and the expectation that he would find employment in his field relatively quickly. Mario is an internationally-trained engineering professional with over 5 years of experience in Civil and Construction Engineering and Project Management.
During his first few weeks in the country, he felt overwhelmed trying to understand labour market requirements, job search techniques and how to connect with industry professionals in order to follow his desired career path.
A family friend referred him to ACCES and the Engineering Connections Program. This was a turning point in his employment journey. Mario attended the Engineering Connections program and continued on to complete the Project Management component. The program provided him with an understanding of the engineering labour market, job search techniques, customized job applications, interview preparation and workplace culture. “The ACCES team was very aware of the challenges faced by internationally-trained engineers and they helped me to acquire new knowledge and to realize my career aspirations,” said Mario. One of the most important aspects of the program for Mario was the opportunity to connect with a number of industry professionals from his field and to enhance his professional network.
In January 2018, ACCES organized a Speed Mentoring® event with EllisDon. After the event, Mario was asked to submit his resume to the employer through ACCES. After several interviews and with support from the Engineering Connections team, he landed his dream job as a Project Coordinator with EllisDon. “My professional journey in Canada began with one important step: ACCES Employment.”
