Safe Food for Canadians Regulations (SCFR)
As of January 15, 2019, Food imports into Canada must meet Canadian requirements as set out in the Safe Food for Canadians Regulations (SFCR) as well as the Food and Drug Regulations (FDR).
These new regulations modernize Canada’s food safety regulatory framework by consolidating 14 existing regulations into a single group and were the key result from Canada’s Food and Consumer Safety Action Plan. The SFCA, alongside the Food and Drugs Act, provide the complete federal legislative scheme for the regulation of food safety in Canada. Some products are associated with elevated food safety risks and have specific import requirements to minimize potential hazards. Food safety remains a major issue in Canada. Incidences of E.coli outbreaks from prepared salads, etc. have led authorities to be more stringent in the enforcement of food safety rules, both at the provincial and federal levels. To learn more about these regulations the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has developed a useful handbook to guide businesses with SFCR.
