Volunteer Opportunities

TFO Canada offers unpaid volunteer roles three times a year (April-June, June-August, September-November) for Ottawa-based volunteers interested in supporting our Canadian market access services and some of our trade capacity building projects, while at the same time gaining experience in research, writing, and results-gathering skills in the fields of international development and trade.  Click here for a complete description of this volunteer role and application instructions.

Consulting Opportunities

1. Part-time Regional Representative (Greater Toronto Area)

Position Status: Part-time consultant (approximately 6 days per month)

Start date: January 2018


To represent TFO Canada in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) and to establish and maintain relationships with local importers, trade support organisations and locally based trade representatives of TFO Canada’s client countries, in order to promote and advance TFO Canada’s mandate of forging market linkages between developing country exporters and the Canadian marketplace.


  1. Work collaboratively with the Ottawa TFO Canada team on identified priorities.
  2. Maintain and build TFO Canada’s database of buyers/importers registered on the TFO Canada web site.
  3. Identify, build and maintain working relationships with appropriate GTA business associations, networks and business media in order to broaden TFO Canada’s base of Canadian importers and enhance TFO Canada visibility, including attending relevant trade shows in the GTA.
  4. Participate in activities of these organisations that are relevant to TFO Canada’s mandate and which will promote TFO Canada services to Canadian importers, including where feasible making formal presentations about TFO Canada and its services.
  5. Maintain and build relationships with selected developing country foreign commercial officers/trade representatives based in the GTA in order to promote TFO Canada services.
  6. Conduct regular meetings, seminars, discussions or other activities to build the capacity of commercial officers/trade representatives based in GTA.
  7. Contribute information on regional activities to TFO Canada newsletters and other communications produced by TFO Canada and help identify success stories.
  8. When requested, assist other TFO Canada staff and TFO Canada Associates in the identification of importers and other appropriate contacts for incoming trade missions in the Greater Toronto Area which are receiving support from TFO Canada.
  9. When requested, assist with securing supplier relationships (e.g. hotels, logistics) for incoming trade missions.
  10. When requested, participate in TFO Canada staff meetings approximately once per year.
  11. Prepare a brief work plan and budget and submit quarterly reports.
  12. Submit time sheets and expense claims in accordance with TFO Canada policies and procedures.



  1. 5 years experience facilitating exporters to access the Canadian Market
  2. Expertise in one or more of the following sectors: fresh fruit and vegetables, processed food, textiles and apparel, handicrafts and home décor, foot ware, cosmetics
  3. Knowledge of key stakeholders and regulations related to importing to Canada
  4. Experience with developing countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America
  5. Speak English and one other language (Spanish/French)
  6. Good organization and communication skills


Resources provided by TFO Canada

  1. Reimbursement for required travel to Ottawa, or other parts of Canada (on a pre-authorised basis).
  2. Reimbursement for approved expenses (e.g. local travel, participation in local trade association activities, organizing seminars, etc.)
  3. Microsoft e-mail account with online access

2. Call for Experts for SIAL and CPMA 2018

TFO Canada is currently seeking highly qualified and experienced consultants with expertise in the Canadian market and sectors and products listed below for SIAL-Montreal and CPMA-Vancouver in April/May 2018. Experts are needed to assess export-readiness of companies and their products, set up buyer meetings and provide targeted support to companies before, during and after the trade shows.

Consultants should have at least 5 years of experience in at least one of the sectors/products listed below. Previous experience working with clients from Asia, Africa and Latin America, and previous experience promoting trade for women-owned businesses would be considered assets. Please indicate your fluency in English, French and/or Spanish.

We are currently seeking consultants for the following high demand areas:

  1. Fresh fruit and vegetables
  2. Processed food
  3. Specialty Foods (ethnic, organic, superfoods, etc.)
  4. Cacao

Calling experts on the Canadian import market!

Join our experts in trade roster for exciting new opportunities providing access to companies from developing countries to the Canadian market
TFO Canada is currently seeking to expand its roster of highly qualified and experienced consultants we call TFO Associates.  We are inviting experts on the Canadian market and export products to submit a CV by email to tfocrc@tfocanada.ca.  Along with completing this application form highlighting your experience.

To join the TFO Canada Associates' roster, consultants should have at least 7 years of experience in a relevant field and, ideally, some previous experience applying technical skills in the context of a developing country, in one or more of the following areas:

  • Marketing/branding and market entry for SMEs in Canada
  • Market Research (including writing skills) 
  • Product development process (including product adaptation for export competitiveness)
  • Presentation skills (addressing sector specific Canadian market overview and market entry requirements; typically for seminars/workshops aimed at developing countries exporter audience)
  • SME Exporters Need Assessment/Market Validation for the Canadian Market Entry
  • Organizing targeted B2B meetings with Canadian importers in specific product lines (part of TFO Canada’s Trade Mission Activities: importer identification and recruitment)
  • Packaging and labeling
  • Compliance with import regulations (e.g. food safety, standards/certifications, tariffs, GAP, HACCP, Organic Certifications, Fair Trade, Kosher, Halal)
  • Gender Equality
  • Project Monitoring and Evaluation

Expertise in the Canadian import market in one or more of the following sectors/product groups:

  • Food products (fresh, processed and frozen consumer-ready foods, beverages and ingredients for the food industry, organic products, products for the gourmet, specialty, ethnic or nostalgic market in Canada)
